Tilak Varma hails from Hyderabad, and Indian cricket noticed this prodigious talent when he was 19 years old. The Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma foresaw Varma would soon be a major player in India's all-formats squad, for his technique and shot-making capability was remarkable.

Varma journeyed into the great game, making his debut for Hyderabad during the 2018-19 season. A year later, he was chosen for India's Under-19 World Cup team and played a crucial role in leading India to the finals, scoring 86 runs in three innings. His performances in domestic cricket, caught the attention of IPL franchises, leading to Mumbai Indians at the 2022 auction.

The 2022 season, for all its disappointments, saw him score 397 runs in 14 games.
