Women are encouraged to join in cricket session for social and health benefits regardless of ages and abilities.
Women Cricket
At the YMCA in Highbridge, free weakly sessions have been funned by Somerset Cricket Federation for women. These sessions will also be available at other county locations soon.
Walking cricket is an adapted version of the traditional game, played at a slower pace to make it accessible to all. The Somerset Cricket Foundation aims to promote fitness and support mental well-being through the sport.
"The social aspect is just as important as the cricket itself. Many of the people I've met here have become friends," said Penny, who attends the Highbridge sessions.
She added, "Having a women's-only session is really encouraging. There are mixed groups available, but some people feel much more comfortable playing with other women."
Elaine, another participant, has also been enjoying the sessions. "It's great fun, and it's lovely to meet women from different groups and feel part of a community," she said.
"I've been watching cricket for 40 years, and when I heard about walking cricket, I had to come and see for myself. At first, it felt intimidating, but the others made me feel welcome. I felt like a big kid on a playground—I've been smiling for 12 months straight!"
The foundation currently operates ten walking cricket hubs across Somerset, with locations including Wells, Bath, and Weston-super-Mare. Both mixed and women-only sessions are available.
"We want to encourage more physical activity to promote healthy living and support mental well-being," said Mustafa Shaikh, community activation officer at Somerset Cricket Foundation.
"Walking cricket is having a huge impact on people's lives, and we want to spread the message that cricket is for everyone. It’s a great way to stay active and have fun."
