They won a thrilling final at London's Lord's Cricket Ground against Australia, West Indies captain was Clive Lloyd. Between June 7 and June 21, 1975, England hosted the first Cricket World Cup. This groundbreaking competition marked the start of one of cricket's most renowned international events. Venues such as Lord's, The Oval, and Edgbaston hosted all of the games in England. In accordance with the format and fashion of the day, each match was played in 60 overs with red balls and usual white clothing. Because Prudential Assurance Company sponsored the game, it was formally known as the Prudential Cup 1975 and was organized by the International Cricket Conference (now ICC).
Eight teams participated in the first World Cup, containing two associate members and six Test-playing countries:
England
India
Australia
West Indies
Pakistan
New Zealand
Sri Lanka (then an associate member)
East Africa (a combined team from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia)
The teams were divided into two groups of four, with each team playing the others in their group once. Each group's top two went to the semi-finals.
The final of the 1975 World Cup, held on June 21 at Lord's, was packed with drama and brilliance. The West Indies batted first and scored 291/8, thanks largely to a blistering 102 off 85 balls by Clive Lloyd. The Windies gained momentum in the innings and secure 12 fours and two sixes. Australia lost at 274 all out, led by Ian Chappell leading from the front. The West Indies won thanks to Viv Richards by three outstanding run-outs. The match highlighted the importance of fielding and team coordination, two aspects the West Indies excelled in.
