In his comments regarding Rohit Sharma's position as India's Test captain, former Australian captain Steve Waugh urged the BCCI to start considering a long-term leadership plan. Waugh praised Rohit is tactical skills and composed demeanor, but he cautioned that given the mental and physical strain of leading in Test cricket, the 36-year-old might not be a long-term solution.
"Rohit Sharma has done a great job leading India, but at his age, the question naturally arises—how long can he continue at this level?" Waugh told reporters during a promotional event in Sydney. It's important to plan ahead."
Waugh praised Rohit for his outstanding time as captain, particularly during crucial series. India has advanced to the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final under his direction and has kept up a strong home record.
"He brings a sense of calm, and the players clearly respond well to him. He's got the respect of the dressing room, and that counts for a lot," Waugh said.
However, Waugh stressed that the challenge for any team is not just finding a good captain, but ensuring a smooth transition when the time comes.
With the current World Test Championship cycle underway and India eyeing a strong finish, Waugh believes the timing is ideal to start grooming the next leader.
"India has the depth. Someone like Shubman Gill, or even KL Rahul if he finds form, could be shaped into a leader. The key is to give that player experience before the full responsibility falls on them," Waugh advised.
India's leadership options include young batters like Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and more experienced players like Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah—though none have yet been clearly positioned as Rohit's successor in red-ball cricket.
Waugh emphasized that strong cricket boards always think one step ahead. "Whether it's Australia or India, great teams are built not just on talent but on leadership. You don't want to be caught off guard when your current captain steps down. Planning that transition is vital," he added.
With India's next Test assignment coming up against Bangladesh and a crucial tour of Australia later this year, questions around Rohit's long-term role may become more prominent. For now, Rohit continues to lead the side with confidence, but the discussion around succession planning has well and truly begun.
Steve Waugh's comments add to the growing conversation about India's future leadership core in the longest format of the game—one that will shape the team's direction for years to come.
