Mohsin Naqvi elected as new president of Asian Cricket Council

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been elected as the new Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, a leadership shift of major proportions in the administration of Asian cricket. The elevation, effective April 3, 2025, follows an online ACC member boards meeting and has Naqvi succeed Sri Lanka Cricket's (SLC) president Shammi Silva, who was in this position since December 2024.

Mohsin Naqvi

An Experienced Leader

Naqvi, with a three-year election term as PCB Chairman appointed in February 2024, has a complicated profile. In addition to cricket administration, he is Pakistan's Interior Minister. His tenure as PCB chief has been marked so far by aggressive marketing of Pakistan's hosting rights, highlighted by the case of the 2025 Champions Trophy negotiations, where he negotiated a hybrid model for India-Pakistan matches.

Vision for Cricket in Asia

In his inaugural speech as ACC President, Naqvi portrayed the message of unity and expansion: "I am deeply honored to take on this position. Asia continues to be the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am keen to collaborate with all member boards to fast-track the development of the game and its worldwide reach"1818. He identified priorities like development programs, youth development, and advancing Asia's role in global cricket.

A Unanimous Decision

Naqvi, his elevation comes at a crucial time, with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) set to oversee major tournaments, including the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2025. According to reports, Naqvi's appointment was finalized after discussions among ACC member boards, which included India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. All of these countries were involved in the discussion.

Immediate Challenges

As the Asia Cup is approaching, Naqvi's direct focus will be this Asia cup of 2025 which is scheduled for September. Initially it was said that India will have to host this cup, some of the reports suggested the relocation to UAE due to the political issues between the countries. This directs us to the 2023 Asia Cup in which India refused to travel to Pakistan for matches and then they used hybrid model to accommodate that, Naqvi played important role in that. Now fans are looking for to his strategies for the upcoming events.

A Two-Year Term

Naqvi's presidency will run until April 2027. The ACC, in its statement, cited his "visionary approach founded on unity, innovation, and strategic development," with the aim of cementing Asia's position as the hub of cricket.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been chosen as the new president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), succeeding Sri Lanka's Shammi Silva. Naqvi, aside from being Pakistan's Interior Minister, comes with an administrative experience with an emphasis on Asian cricket unity. The 2025 Asia Cup to be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be his first challenge with previous India-Pakistan hosting controversies haunting the region. Naqvi intends to kickstart development programs and Asia's world cricket dominance during his 2025-2027 tenure.
