Los Angeles 2028 Olympics to Feature Cricket for the First Time: Making Its Olympic Comeback After 128 Years

On Wednesday, 9th of April 10, 2025, the organizers said that Cricket will have six teams competing for the top medals when the sport makes its return to the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games following a 128-year hiatus.

Cricket is set to feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for the first time in a breakthrough for the sport. It is one of the world’s most popular sports which last appeared in the Olympics at the Paris 1900 Games when a single match was played between Great Britain and France and it is going to return at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The inclusion of cricket was ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of an effort to attract new fans and audiences from South Asia, where the sport has a huge following.

Why Cricket in the Olympics

Cricket is a highly popular sport worldwide, having over 2.5 billion followers in more than 120 nations. Cricket is extremely culturally significant, particularly in countries such as India, Australia, and the UK, where it is a symbol of national pride and identity. ICC World Cup and IPL are two of the most viewed tournaments with millions of spectators, generating enormous economic influence through sponsorship, media rights, and merchandise.

The LA28 organizing committee officially presented cricket's inclusion for providing the Olympic program with greater diversity and appeal for younger generations around the globe. The T20 format that is going to be featured is a quick, three-hour version of the game, which will also render it Olympic-schedule friendly.

Cricket was previously included in the Olympics back in 1900 when just two teams (Great Britain and France) competed. This time, however, the tournament will probably include six teams (men's and women's) whose qualification details have yet to be worked out.

Global Reaction to Cricket Inclusion in Olympics

The addition of cricket to the 2028 Olympics has generated huge excitement, with the ICC Chairman Greg Barclay terming it a "landmark decision" that would take the game to every corner of the world.

Indian cricket icons such as Virat Kohli and Harmanpreet Kaur have shown keenness to represent their nation at the Olympic level, whereas USA Cricket is taking it as a great chance to make the sport more popular in the United States of America, especially with Major League Cricket (MLC) picking up steam. The decision has been embraced as a game-changer for the worldwide popularity of cricket.

Cricket has over billions of fans across the world, some countries treat it as their cultural game. Olympics has world most popular games in it and now Cricket is going to be one of them in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Considering the fame of cricket, it is one of the great decision the organizers have made and the legends of cricket around the globe have reacted to it with their great appreciation.
