A significant chapter in Ambati Rayudu's cricket career has come to an end with the official termination of his affiliation with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Earlier this week, Rayudu confirmed his departure in an exclusive interview after playing for the team and then becoming a mentor.
Rayudu, who started working for CSK in 2018, claimed that timing and mutual consent led to the decision.
"It seemed like the ideal time. I've had some of the best years of my career with CSK. But every journey must come to an end," he said.
Rayudu played a significant part in CSK's 2018 comeback season and was a part of three championship campaigns. It was one of his best IPL season that year, scoring 602 runs, which helped Chennai win the trophy following a two-year ban.
After the IPL 2023 final, Rayudu retired from all forms of cricket, but he continued to serve as a mentor for the team through the 2024 campaign. He worked closely with the younger players, assisting them in acclimating to the demanding environment of the team.
"Last season, I enjoyed being behind the scenes—guiding the boys, sharing my experience. But now CSK is in a good place with fresh energy. It's time I stepped aside," he explained.
In addition, Rayudu talked candidly about his relationship with MS Dhoni, referring to him as "the calm force" behind his comeback.
"Dhoni bhai trusted me when not many did. He gave me the freedom to express myself. That belief meant everything," Rayudu said with visible emotion.
On and off the field, their partnership was clear, and Rayudu was frequently commended for enhancing Dhoni's tactical approach during the tense middle overs.
Although the team has not yet made an official announcement, there are rumors circulating that CSK management is planning a unique send-off for Rayudu at one of this season's home games. Fans have already expressed their gratitude on social media for his contributions and standout yellow knocks.
When questioned about his future plans, Rayudu made a suggestion that he would continue to be active in the game.
"Cricket has given me everything. Whether it's coaching, commentary, or grassroots development—I want to give back in some way," he said.
