IPL has seen some strategic elements and Rule changes in its history such as Super Over which applies in those matches which ends in a tie. Another element is named after the mandatory breaks during each innings, called Strategic-time-out. Third one is Power-play overs which, when applies, allow more players to come inside circle and let the batsmen play explosively. However, they have never seen such a rule as "Impact Player Rule" before 2023 league. This rule got introduced in 2023 in the Indian Premier League "IPL", which main purpose was to make the game more engaging, strategic and it also allows captains to have more options in shaping their performance.
A strategic rule of substitution introduced in 2023 in the Indian Premier League is called Impact Player Rule. According to this rule, each team can name 5 substitute players before starting of the match and then by the order of the captain one of them chosen by the captain can join during the match instead of any of the first 11 players.
Conditions and Restrictions: The substitution can only occur at certain times during the game, like when the batsman retires or the fall of a wicket, start of the innings or at the end of an over. If a team has at-least 4 overseas players then the impact player has to be an Indian, if less, then it can be an overseas player too. The player who got replaced by an impact player, he cannot take any further part in the game.
Debate and Criticism: Some of the players like Mohammad Siraj and Rohit Sharma added according to the rule that is makes the game a 12 player contest and also reduces the role of all-rounders.
According to the regular cricket substitution which usually is for injured players and they can only field but Impact player rule allows the cricketer to actively participate in the game and can bat and bowl too.
There was no such rule for around 15 years in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but to make the game more interesting, engaging, strategic and to make it more open for new records, the Impact Player rule got introduced at the IPL season of year 2023 according to which a player can bat and bowl but he must be an Indian unless there are less than 4 overseas players in starting 11 of the team. Although there was some criticism about the rule but it still got implemented and is confirm to be in place at-least till 2027.
